Equipment and Skills to make life easier.

EYECAN’s Community Team will assess the needs of new referrals and match individuals to the support and aids required. Support is on-going as an individual’s needs may change over time.

New aids and equipment are constantly being developed. The following is a snapshot of what is available at the time of writing.

Please book an appointment with EYECAN’s Community Team to allow us to find the equipment which best suits your needs and to provide you with relevant training.

Kitchen:

There is a large range of equipment to make tasks in the kitchen easier, from Liquid Level Indicators which help you to pour liquids without overspilling, talking scales and talking thermometers, to raised adhesive, coloured bumps to help you interpret the settings on cooker and washing machine dials. Contrasting mats will help you to see tableware clearly at mealtimes, whilst oven shelf protectors will protect you from burns when using the oven.

Sitting room:

Big-button remote controls and TV specs may help make TV more accessible for you, along with audio description, which is available on some programmes. Day light bulbs and task lamps can improve light quality for you, as can advice on where to position chairs in respect to sources of light, such as windows. Large-print books, puzzle books, playing cards and tactile games such as dominoes can help you to relax and have fun.

Bathroom:

Talking bathroom scales will advise you of your weight, whilst portable magnified mirrors will help you shave or apply make-up, and non-slip contrasting bathmats will help you to manoeuvre around safely.

Cleaning:

The Community Team can provide skills training on techniques and methods to help keep your home safe and tidy.

Banking and utilities:

Signature guides are available to help you sign cheques and documents, whilst the Community Team can support you to request large-print statements and notices.
