Making text, phones, and computers accessible.
The Community Team offers a “try before you buy” option on all equipment provided, so you can be sure items are useful before purchasing. Subject to financial review, expensive items of equipment are often available as Equipment Loan. A small annual administration fee of £40 is levied on Loan items. Should you wish to purchase an item this can be supplied and is chargeable.
Accessible means of communication:
There are many devices available which will make your life easier. Magnifiers range from simple hand-held items to larger video magnifiers which can change the size and contrast of text to suit your needs. Phones can be simple to use with pre-programmed options, so that you can call the people who matter most to you without tapping in lengthy numbers. More complex smartphones are also available with many different features, such as text to speech and Apps which, for instance, can help you to identify shopping items by reading bar codes. 195, a free directory enquiries service, available from JT, directly connects you to the party you are calling. EYECAN’s Community Team can set this up for you. Tablets also present a wealth of accessible options, similar to smartphones, but perhaps you just need a high contrast keyboard to use with your PC. Talking scanners will read documents to you, talking clocks and watches will speak the time, whilst voice activation devices will tell you the news or provide updates about the weather. Audio players can help you to enjoy books again.
Don’t be nervous about technology, our Community Team will give you lots of advice and assistance and match you to equipment that suits your requirements.
