EYECAN'S May NEWS BULLETIN
What's coming up in June
- You and EYE: Our next monthly drop-in session is on Friday 5th June from 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm, all welcome. You and EYE is held at Windward House, Route de La Liberation, St. Helier. The following You and EYE dates are: July 3rd, and August 7th.
- Cycling: (subject to weather) will be at Les Quennevais on 12th June. Please get in touch if you’re interested in trying our cycling session.
- Voting, 7th of June: For some time now, we have been working with the States Greffe who have been working hard to ensure islanders living with sight loss can access the forthcoming election materials. You can now find audio recordings of manifestos and literature produced by the States Greffe, on our website: www.eyecan.je
- World Volunteers Week: We would like to send a huge thanks to our wonderful volunteers who week after week, year after year, show up for our clients to help them attend their activities and social and art groups. We quite simply couldn’t offer what we do, without them! I think you will all join us in agreeing that they enrich our lives here at the EYECAN community. Thank you.
- Save the Date, July 3rd: Customer and local services will be attending our July You and EYE (3rd of July) session for a drop in clinic, and will be available for adults under 65 to have individual conversations around benefits and income support.
- Royal Visit: We’re delighted to share that we’ve been chosen to host a visit from Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, to EYECAN during her visit to Jersey this June. This is a wonderful opportunity for us, and we look forward to sharing more about her visit.
- International Albinism Awareness Day: On the 13th of June, we will be celebrating International Albinism Awareness Day. People with albinism often experience vision challenges due reduced pigment in their eyes. We hope you will join us by wearing yellow – the official colour of Albinism Awareness. We also look forward to sharing an EYECAN story with you very soon from one of our clients.
- Cake Sale Fundraiser: On the 13th and 14th of June (Saturday and Sunday) RJH&HS will be hosting their Summer Country Fair, and EYECAN have been chosen as the charity to receive the proceeds from their cake sale. We will be there with one of our stalls, and we’d love if you could come along and support us.
May Round up
- Ports of Jersey Advisory Group: We were very happy to have been involved in Ports of Jersey’s advisory group last month, a great opportunity to feed into ongoing development that aims to make travel more inclusive.
- States Greffe Talk: Last month, as part of our work alongside the States Greffe team, an election session was offered to our clients. It was a great opportunity for our clients to find out how they can vote and what support will be available to enable independent voting.
- Jean Carter Visit: It was a privilege to host Jean Carter, who used to work at the Jersey Blind Society 20 years ago, back to Westlea last month, reminiscing and learning more about Jean’s time working and supporting the Jersey Blind Society (Now EYECAN). Jean retired from the charity following 15 years of dedicated service.
- 300 Club Winners: Congratulations to the winners of May’s 300 club draw. 1st Prize of £150 – No. 121, 2nd Prize of £75 – No. 50, 3rd Prize of £50 – No. 149. (Winners have been contacted).
Donations
Donations are vital to EYECAN’s ongoing ability to support islanders living with sight loss. Continued demand for our services and the rising cost of delivery means that sustainable fundraising is essential.
Every contribution helps us maintain and grow the free or low‑cost services that we provide to those who need them most. All donations stay on the island, directly benefiting our local community and enabling EYECAN to make a meaningful impact.
Thank you for your support. Please head over to our Donations page for donation options.
